Depending upon whose numbers you believe, at least 41% of us (and it could be as high as 50% to 75%) don’t use all of our paid vacation.
I am one of the guilty ones.
My excuse (or at least what I tell myself): I like working.
But every expert will tell you that not taking time off is a huge detriment to productivity, efficiency and your health.
So why don’t we take the time off we’re owed? Most folks say it’s just not “easy” to do.
The top reasons (and many list more than one):
- 40% fear returning to a mountain of work
- 35% believe nobody else can do their job
- 33% say they can’t afford to use their time off for financial reasons
- 22% say they do not want to be seen as replaceable
- 28% believe it shows greater dedication to their company and their job
This year, I’ve decided to break from my norm. I’m going to take all of my vacation! And I’m starting by taking next week off (as soon as I get all my work done so I can).
We’ll see how that goes. I’ll keep you posted.
